The following is an analysis of the organisation and structure of this book: Part I: The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid This part is divided into six chapters, with each of the chapters addressing a specific aspect of the so called fortune at the bottom of the pyramid. Chapter 1: The Market at the Bottom of the Pyramid This chapter addresses several aspects of the market segment in this portion of the society (Prahalad 3-22). Among the issues that are addressed in this chapter are the power of dominant logic and the nature of the bottom of the pyramid market. Prahalad asserts that â€Å"there is money at the bottom of the pyramid† (10). This is considering the sheer size of the market and the fact that members of this segment of society also have a disposable income, albeit at lower levels than those of the upper echelons of the society. Chapter 2: Products and Services for the BoP In this chapter, Prahalad provides the business executives with a philosophy that will help them develop products and services for the consumer at this level (Nicola 9: Prahalad Stuart 2). He is of the view that there are â€Å"twelve principles of innovatio n† that the businesses should employ (Prahalad 25), including innovativeness and respecting the consumer. Chapter 3: BoP: A Global Opportunity? Here, the author analyses the BoP market within the global context. He is of the view that local growth opportunities are linked to innovations and opportunities in the global market (Prahalad 50, 52: Saritha 20). Chapter 4: The Ecosystem for Wealth Creation In this chapter, the author talks of the environment within which wealth is made as far as the BoP is concerned. He particularly talks of the contract between the poor and the business enterprises amongst them. The author is of the view that the poor must be respected in these contracts, and the â€Å"inequities in the contracts (should also) be reduced† (Prahalad 69, 72). Chapter 5: Reducing Corruption Here, the author identifies corruption as one of the hindrances to eradication of poverty among the 4 billion poor people of the world (London 5). He provides strategies to r educe corruption here by creating what he refers to as â€Å"transaction governance capacity† (Prahalad 77) amongst the poor. He provides several case studies where this strategy has worked, including the Andhra Pradesh e-Governance project and the Centre for Good Governance (Prahalad 85, 90: Kandachar Minna 30). Chapter 6: Development as Social Transformation In this chapter, the author argues on how development can be conceptualised as a social transformation in the society, providing a social aspect of development. He identifies several barriers to this form of development, such as communication barriers and exclusion of women, and provides possible remedies to the same. Part II: Innovative Practices at the Bottom of the Pyramid It is in this section that Prahalad provides case studies of business enterprises that have adopted his proposed mode of operation and succeeded (Prahalad 113-381). Some of these case studies are provided in text while others are provided in audio CDs. This part is divided into six sections. In section I, Prahalad talks of the market at the BoP and provides the cases of Casas Bahia and CEMEX. In section II, he talks of the missing link in engaging community in eradicating poverty via a business model. He provides the story of the Annapurna Salt Company and the Hindustan Lever Limited. The same structure of providing case studies to drive home some of the arguments is used in throughout the other sections. Part III: CD This section is provided in a CD format. It is 35 minutes of video coverage depicting success of the case studies that were covered in text format in section II. The filming for the CD is done on location, with BoP locations in five countries acting as the stage. These are India, Peru, Mà ©xico, Brazil and Venezuela in Latin America (Prahalad 34). Critique of the Book Structure and Organisation The book starts with a preface, which is a great idea as it prepares the reader on what to expect within the text. Th is is followed by a section titled About the Author, where a brief overview of Prahalad is given. This is also a great idea, as it provides the reader with an idea on the kind of person that they will be interacting with throughout the book. It was also a great idea for the author to organise the book into three parts, each of which is further subdivided into several sections. This makes the book appear organised, and it also makes it easy for the reader to go through it. There is no unnecessary clutter in the organisation of the book as far as the sections are concerned. The use of the CD was similarly ingenious. It enriches the interaction of the reader with the book. Prahalad uses the same innovation that he beseeches business executives to use in interacting with his readers. Thematic Analysis Several themes emerge from this book, the major one been eradication of poverty through the BoP business model. The other themes revolve around this major one, and they can be seen as supp orting the same. The following are some of the themes that are discernible from the book: The Theme of Poverty Prahalad is of the view that the consumers at the bottom of the pyramid are afflicted by poverty, meaning that more than 4 billion people in the world today live on about $2.50 per day (Landrum 28). This state of affairs is brought about by interplay of various factors. This is for example illiteracy among this group, lack of employment and high birth rates among others. To underscore the status of poverty in the society, Prahalad provides the case of India, where more than 5.5 million people have their limbs amputated (Schumpeter 4). More than 25,000 continue losing their limbs in this country per annum, further increasing the population. The loss of limbs is caused by several factors such as disease, accidents and such others. These people cannot afford a prosthesis, which goes for about 7,000 dollars. This being the case, it becomes very hard for this people to exploit t heir potential, and as such, they continue wallowing in poverty. The author also provides the case of Mà ©xico, a country where, according to latest statistics, approximately 24 million people live on less than five dollars in a day (Prahalad 45). The banks are unwilling to provide these people with credit facilities, making it really hard for them to escape from poverty. Prahalad is of the view that business enterprises need to tackle this problem of poverty in order to create a sustainable consumer base. As such, instead of focusing so much on profits, businesses should come up with strategies that will make these people escape poverty, increase their per capita income and subsequently, their purchasing power. Eradicating Poverty Through Profits The proposed business strategy points out to the fact that it is possible for businesses to make profits and at the same time eradicate poverty in the community. This can be done through collaboration with the consumers and other stake ho lders such as non-governmental agencies (Kandachar Minna 31). When this happens, all the stakeholders benefit, creating a win-win situation, as opposed to the win-lose situation where businesses appear to exploit the local communities. The local community benefits by having the poverty levels reduced, the business enterprises benefit by making profits, while other stakeholders such as the NGOs benefit by having attained one of their goals, that of reducing extreme poverty in the community. The Need for Collaboration Another theme is that of the need of collaboration among the various stakeholders in order to make the proposed business model work. It is noted that the players cannot work in isolation; rather, they have to make adjustments and sacrifices to accommodate each other. The business enterprises need to respect the consumer, taking their perspectives into consideration when coming up with strategies to fight poverty. The consumers, on their part, need to look at the busines s enterprises as partners in development, rather than viewing them as exploiters. On their part, the NGOs should strive to ensure that the members of the community and the business enterprises work in tandem. This is for example encouraging the businesses to contribute to corporate social responsibility efforts in the community. Conclusion.  A Critique of the Book Prahalad’s arguments in this book and largely logical, and are acceptable and significant in reducing poverty among the bottom of the pyramid segment. However, there are several inherent assumptions made by this author that waters down the credibility of their book. For example, it seems that Prahalad overestimates the purchasing power of the poor within the bottom of the pyramid bracket. A case in point is when he seems to exaggerate their number. His statistics vary from those of other analysts in the field, and they seem to be the highest. The World Bank puts the number of the poor at about 2.7 billion, while P rahalad doubles this to about 4 billion (Landrum 29). There are also those who question whether the multinational corporation are suited to the bottom of the pyramid market as Prahalad suggests. His argument to this end is further weakened when one takes a critical look at the profile of the businesses that he uses in his twelve case studies. These businesses, at least most of them, are small to medium enterprises, while others are non-profit making (Karnani 9). Given that none of the case studies given seems to support a multinational in this market, questions arise regarding the tenability of Prahalad’s recommendation to this end. Apart from these minor weaknesses, Prahalad’s book can be regarded as a bold and significant step towards eradication of poverty among the world’s poorest. The Whitlam Dismissal 1975 The dismissal of the Whitlam Government on November 11th in 1975 remains to this day one of the most dramatic political events in Australian history. 'The Dismissal' is a term that has come into general use since 1975, to describe the termination of the elected Whitlam Labor Government by the then Governor-General, Sir John Kerr. The event came as the culmination of one of the most tension-filled years in Australian political history. The Whitlam Government, elected in 1972 after 23 years of Liberal rule, was dealing with an economic downturn and facing considerable criticism following a number of scandals. Its ability to govern was also destabilised by the fact that it lacked a clear majority in the Senate. The Whitlam Government suffered a block in supply in 1974 and was re-elected after the resulting double dissolution. The Opposition then blocked supply again in 1975 but the Whitlam Government refused to advise a double dissolution or resign.Gough WhitlamGovernor-General Sir John Kerr dismissed the Whitlam Government and forced them to an election. Kerr installed Fraser as caretaker Prime Minister and called for a full election of both Houses of Parliament on December 13. Why Should High and Low Scorers Prepare Differently for the ACT? When it comes to preparing for standardized tests, not everyone has the same needs.If you’re already scoring high on the ACT, you will almost certainly have different weak points than someone who’s scoring lower.On the ACT, a high scorer would be someone who is consistently scoring a 27 or higher on practice tests. Here are a few study tips that will help you to improve your scores dramatically if you're struggling with the ACT. Skip the Hardest Questions As someone who’s still scoring low on the ACT, you should focus on questions you know you can answer reliably.You want to avoid spending too much time on hard questions and missing out on easy questions later on in the section.This means training yourself to skip any questions that you spend more than 30 seconds trying to figure out without success.There is no point in spending excessive amounts of time on questions that may not earn you any points! You should always make a first pass through each section and answer all of the easy questions first. Then, if you have time left, you can circle back to the beginning of the section and work on more difficult questions. This will allow you to spend as much time as you need on hard questions without sacrificing any points or stressing out about making it to the end before time runs out. Change Up Your Reading Method The Reading section on the ACT is where low scorers can run into a lot of issues with time. Most of the questions aren't too complex, but there's so much to read that students often find themselves rushing on the last passage or not getting to it at all. If you have this problem as a low scorer, I would recommend that you reevaluate how you're reading passages on the test. It's a natural tendency for students to read the passages closely because that's how they've been taught to read in school. However, this isn't the best method to use on the test, especially if you're having problems with time. You should try skimming the passage quickly and then answering as many questions as possible. You can read in more detail based on the questions you're asked, but you won't necessarily have to read every single word of the passage. You might also try skipping the passage entirely at first and heading straight for the questions. You can read certain sections of the passage to answer detail questions and then do a quick skim later if you're having trouble with big picture questions without a full read through. Try these methods on practice tests and see which one works best for you. You might also decide to read the passages in a specific order based on which type of subject matter is your strong point. For example, if you're more interested in science, you might skip to the end of the reading section right away and read the natural sciences passage first. This way, you ensure that you have the best shot of answering questions that are easier for you without being in a rush. This will maximize the points you earn on the section as a whole. This is most prevalent in the math section, where many different concepts are tested, some of which you may have learned about a while ago and forgotten. If you're not clear on what exactly is tested on the math section, read this article that goes through all the main concepts.The ACT also doesn't provide students with formulas in the math section. If you're struggling in this area, take a look at this list of all the formulas you need to know for the ACT. Depending on the specific issues you're facing, you might use your class notes, textbook, or an ACT review book to brush up on your knowledge. As you go through practice tests results, notice the types of content errors you make most frequently and focus your studying on those areas. We have a bunch of different articles that review specific content areas on the ACT math section, including lines and slopes, angles, sequences, algebra functions, and many more.Once you feel more confident, you can go back and do some relevant practice questions to verify that you understand the material. Prevent Question Misunderstandings Question misunderstandings are a common problem for low scorers, although they may be less of an issue on the ACT than the SAT. These mistakes can be annoying, but they are easy to avoid once you get into better test-taking habits. A good way to make sure you're focused on what the question is actually asking is to underline the most important parts of the question before you answer it. This will prevent you from being distracted by extraneous information that might confuse you. I would say this is a helpful strategy on the Science and Math sections in particular. ACT Science loves to distract you with a bunch of facts that aren't actually relevant to the question itself, causing many students to get confused and overwhelmed. If you zero in on key words instead, you may be surprised to see that the questions aren't all that complicated, and all the extra numbers and scientific facts are just there as filler. On the Math section, students sometimes make the mistake of solving for a value that is relevant to the question but isn't the actual answer. Underlining what the question is asking for can help you to avoid these types of misunderstandings as well. Don't get distracted by information that's unrelated to the task at hand. Also, I can't even imagine what kind of insane person would text and drive with a flip phone. Strategies Low ACT Scorers Should Avoid There are also some strategies that work well for high scorers but shouldn't be a part of yourtest-taking methods or preparation if you have low ACT scores. Once you fix your more fundamental problems and raise your scores a little more, you might consider using these strategies, but they can hurt you if you're currently in the low scorer range. Focusing Too Much on Careless Mistakes Of course, low scorers can still make careless mistakes, but they're not nearly as common. If you're scoring low, most of your mistakes will not be careless - they will be because you're running out of time or struggling with understanding the questions. Try not to focus too much on these types of mistakes before you fix your other problem areas. Often, you will find that you make fewer careless mistakes as you start to remedy your deeper issues with content and time. As you start to score higher and you find that a larger proportion of your mistakes are "careless," you can begin working on reading more carefully and preventing yourself from rushing. Save this for when you're consistently scoring closer to the high scorer range so that you don't ignore more pressing issues for superficial mistakes. Trying to Answer Every Question Correctly On the ACT, since there's no penalty for incorrect answers, you should always answer every question in each section (even if your answer ends up being a blind guess). However, if you're a low scorer, you shouldn't put too much pressure on yourself to figure out difficult questions. As I said earlier, you should immediately skip any question that you can't figure out within 30 seconds so that you make it through all the easy questions in each section before time runs out. If you're not making progress on a difficult question, don't stress yourself out about it. As a low scorer, you don't have to worry too much about the hardest subset of questions on the test. You're not aiming for perfection or close to perfection (at least not yet) so getting wound up about hard questions is only going to exacerbate your anxiety and potentially hurt your scores. If you know you can't figure something out, just take a random guess and focus more on questions that are manageable and have a greater likelihood of earning you points. If you get stressed out, remember this and you might feel better. Then again, it might just remind you of that one annoying older relative who clearly spends too much money in terrible gift shops. Conclusion It's beneficial for low scorers to use different strategies than high scorers to maximize their results on the ACT. The Shop The sound made Elizabeth jump. Yet again it had come from the shop next door. She frowned at the old, battered doors of the ancient antique store. It was as though the owner was renovating. The problem was, the shop did not have one. The owner had won the lottery and moved to Las Vegas a few months ago. Leaving his battered old shop and all the merchandise behind. Elizabeth had called the police three times but nobody was found. The police weren’t very pleased after the third time. Anyway, even if the store was unguarded Elizabeth doubted there would be any looters – most of the merchandise was dragged from the local dump. SMASH Elizabeth jumped again. The noise was replaced by the loud, sharp shriek of an electric drill gnawing at the wall. The ground seemed to shake at the loud, shrill noise. Elizabeth covered her ears. She was very annoyed now. The noise next door has been going night and day for the past three days, and because she lived at the back of her boutique she couldn’t get a wink of sleep. A truck pulled up next to the boutique, two extremely hairy and extremely tattooed men came out the back and began unloading boxes marked â€Å"summer drs† onto the footpath. For Environmental Balance, Pick Up a Rifle Essay

In the article â€Å"For Environmental Balance, Pick up a Rifle† by Nicholas Kristof, the author informs the reader about the importance of hunting, arguing that hunting needs to be brought back in the United States to control the deer population. He talks about the negative impact deer have caused in death of people by car accidents and with the destruction of the ecosystem with their overpopulation. The majority of deer have had a profoundly unnatural effect in certain parts of New York and New Jersey. Kristof notes that these days many people view hunting as a cruel and brutal and are opting for other methods for deer control due to their sympathy for deer. He states that it is a waste of time and money for liberals and conservatives to be using birth control and condoms; to prevent pregnancy to the deer. With the decline in hunting practices in North America, further environmental imbalance continues, which makes hunting an ecological necessity. If hunting were to increase in the coming years, individuals would be able to participate in the outdoors and enjoy nature. However, Kristof is an unreliable source in the knowledge of animal control and uses ineffective persuasion on this controversial topic. When it comes to experts on animal control, environmentalists spend an excruciating amount of time examining animals that have had a habitat interference with the ecosystem. Nicholas Kristof is not a reliable source of information; he has based his article off of an outsider’s point of view. While a column piece points out issues associated within our society, Kristof has yet to have the appropriate background and information to support his claim. Growing up on a farm in Oregon, studying law, and working as a columnist in The New York Times, gives some insight as to why Kristof wrote the article in the first place. This is because his audience includes a wide range of people; from highly educated to hardly any education. He is  writing in a city where hunting is a foreign concept, which leads Kristof to writing a commentary piece that relates to other topics individuals know about rather than the information of the deer in general. For example, he states â€Å"It’s s till true that in a typical year, an American is less likely to be killed by Osama bin Laden than by Bambi† giving the reader irrelevant material that has nothing to do with the topic of deer control. The author often states statistics that are in his favor, so his point is substantiated. In an article, â€Å"Journal of Wildlife Management† by Clinton Faas talks about how people generalize all deer as something harmful without considering the different types of deer. Not many people know about the axis and white-tailed deer that have had a negative impact throughout the environment. While in the article Kristof’s states that â€Å"The New Jersey Audubon Society this year advocated deer hunting as an ecological necessity.† (Kristof, 13) Yet while researching the Audubon Society it states that the white-tail deer made resources scarce in the ecosystem and it shows no sign of resorting to the concept of hunting. Nicholas Kristof takes the word deer throughout his article and made an assumption that all deer are harmful to society. The idea that hunting deer should be encouraged for the benefit of society and that it connects people with nature is remarkably repugnant in Nicholas Kristof’s â€Å"For the Environmental Balance, Pick up a Rifle.à ¢â‚¬  Many animal activists, such as the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) would agree that animals are not ours to use for food, clothing, experimentation, or entertainment. The reason that it is important to treat other living things with dignity and respect is because they have the capacity to suffer as people do. We are told that it is wrong to hurt other people, physically and mentally. Although in the article Kristof becomes indulged in the fact that animals are the problem in society and should be put down for it. For instance he quotes â€Å"So it’s time to reestablish a balance in the natural world, by accepting the idea that hunting is as natural as bird watching.† (Kristof, 18) Yet the majority of the environments issues are caused by human actions. For example, misguided construction, irrigation and mining can deface the natural landscape and disrupt important ecological processes. Aggressive fishing and hunting can deplete entire stocks of species. Human migration can introduce alien competitors to native food chains. While reading Nicholas Kristof’s article,  I analyzed and exposed the unreliable information he provide d. He stated statics that were vague and unspecific, misguiding the reader with irrelevant facts on other topics, and did not have the appropriate background to be considered an expert on the problem of animal control. Overall, hunting is not the way to control the deer population nor has the author convinced his reader.
